December 2007 Archives

Waitrose Blanc de Blanc Non Vintage Champagne may have won some high praise and awards. Tragically, the chances of being able to find any on the shelves are slightly less than zero. Unobtainable and almost mythic; we only have a few people’s word that the drink actually ever existed.

There seems to be some link between posh-o wine and religion. Let’s face it. It’s highly unlikely that many of us will have the opportunity (on the basis of price and production limits) to drink, say, La Tache 1990. Yet, it is a marvelous ideal. Until we do manage to neck a few bottles then we can only take the word of the privileged few. For most of us it will remain nothing more than a piece of wine erotica.

Many vastly intelligent people believe in the existence of God. Some of them have even tasted La Tache. Is there a connection between those who are able to afford the world’s finest wines and Big G’s true believers. A reverse correlation perhaps? Whatever the case, we should be told.

Should anyone out there have a verifiable of picture a ‘recognized’ supreme being drinking either of the two wines mentioned above then do get in touch.

Kirsty's Magic Carpet Ride

Kirsty shampooed the carpets at home last weekend. While I was busy selling booze, she was knee deep trying to erase four years of gunk from the floor. That was after moving most of the furniture. Tiring as my day was, it was nothing compared to her's.

Apparently, it took three or four cleans to persuade our carpet to go back to its natural, less grimy character. The Hire Centre person told us that we'd probably only use two thirds of a large bottle of cleaning solution. It finished up being double that.

Sunday was spent at my cousin Marian's with herself and Shelagh. Sadly, Shelagh's mum died a few days ago. Naturally, a toast was in order. Non vintage Bollinger was just the thing. Classy, precise powerful and elegeant. Nice if you can get it.

Congrats to Beth and Andy T. They now have a daughter called Ellie Hannah.

One definition of wisdom is seeing the connection between things (Genet I think). Let's look at the current life situation.

Teacher training did not work out because I couldn't keep up with the marking and almost had a nervous breakdown. The so-called "gift" of dyspraxia was the main problem there.

These days I work as a learning support person for young people with special educational needs. This is fine most of the time, but sometimes I find myself helping people who don't want to be helped and resent me being there. By midweek I'm down. By Friday it's midnight at the Cafe Depresso.

My applications for other jobs haven't entirely successful yet. Two interviews thus far. Two rejections but with useful feedback. The fight continues.

Waitrose have come up trumps in their Balham store. They're carrying an Australian wine from the Wirra Wirra company. The vino is called "The Dead Ringer" Cabernet Sauvignon. It used to be known as "The Angelus" and was one of the bottles that really got me into Wine. It's top stuff made from both rich Mclaren Vale (warmer climate) grapes and elegeant Coonawarra fruit from pastures cooler. The Wine Society had sold out of this beauty, so Kirsty and I bought their lovely Shiraz instead. Now, thanks to the John Lewis Partnerhip, we have the best of both worlds. Hooray!

Sorry for the lack of posts recently. Normal service will resume soon.

For two weeks, WOM has been spammed into oblivion by various faceless types. Now that things have been revamped, we can revert to business as usual.
